Promoting America's 400th Anniversary in Virginia | With the 400th anniversary of the settling of Jamestown as a permanent colony in the New World, the goal of Jamestown 2007 is to capture the spirit, imagination, and diversity of Americans. Jamestown 2007 wished to develop that energy into a myriad of community programs, signature events, and national and international festivities that showcase Virginia's unique role as the birthplace of modern America and the cradle of American democratic traditions, cultures, ideologies and principles. To this end, a website representing this anniversary needed to allow visitors to absorb every aspect of the commemoration, and to allow sponsors and participants a simple method of promoting events and highlighting their roles in the Jamestown community. CINIVA's custom web applications and knack for functional, attractive design fit the bill. A searchable calendar was created to allow visitors to find various events and activities scheduled according to region (as events are to be scheduled all over the state) and area of interest - from parades to picnics, reenactments to exhibits. Simple back-end functionality allows third-party participants to register onsite as part of the Virginia 2007 Community Program and post their information events related to the anniversary. Memories of past Jamestown commemorations are collected on scripted form and shared with the Internet community. Onsite video highlights anticipation for the anniversary and for its Honorary Chair, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Due to the site's relevance and status, Jamestown2007.org enjoys a healthy presence in search on terms related to early American history and the Jamestown events. User-friendly statistics allow the planning committe to gauge global interest in the coming events and detmine which pages are popular and which need improvement in terms of content and keyword saturation. As the anniversary approaches, Jamestown2007.org enjoys a steady readership, averaging nearly sixty thousand visits a month, and will prove to be an invaluable database of Virginia history for years to come.
